Newry Maritime Association will be recognising the contribution of Warrenpoint Shipyard with a civic tribute and plaque unveiling at The Square, Warrenpoint.
Warrenpoint may be best known today as a tourism destination, but during both World Wars it was home to a major shipbuilding industry that employed hundreds of local men.
During WWI, around 400 men worked on the construction of concrete barges, while during WWII a new operation was established to build Landing Craft Tanks (LCTs). At its height, the project supported a workforce of almost 1,200 people, making it one of the largest employers in South Down.
Everyone is welcome.
