Warrenpoint may be best known today as a tourism destination, but during both World Wars it was home to a major shipbuilding industry that employed hundreds of local men.
Two wars, two yards
During WWI, around 400 men worked on the construction of concrete barges. During WWII a new operation was established to build Landing Craft Tanks (LCTs). At its height, the project supported a workforce of almost 1,200 people, making it one of the largest employers in South Down.
Recognising the shipyard
In October 2026 NMA Chairperson James McArevey presented the story of the people, industry and shipyards that helped put Warrenpoint at the heart of the wartime effort to Warrenpoint Historical Society, followed by a civic tribute and plaque unveiling at The Square, Warrenpoint.
